The Academy Awards, Amy Adams and Romance

Reggi Allder author of Romantic Suspense and Contemporary novels- Thoughts, tips and author interviews

Of course most people know the 86th Academy Awards (Oscar) show is on Sunday, March 2, 2014. Amy Adams has been nominated for an Academy Award for her part in American Hustle. I first saw her in Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day a film from 2008 and was Enchanted. Oh by the way, that’s another of her films. : ) Below is a review of Miss Pettigrew
Reggi's Rating System:
1 to 4 Hearts for romance
1 to 4 Chocolates for sweetness

Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day

Four hearts, Four chocolates
Throw in a smiley face for fun : )

Rated PG

1930’s London: After unjustly losing her job without notice or severance pay Miss Guinevere Pettigrew (Frances McDormand) needs a job and a place to live ASAP. She takes a position for which she has no experience and learns about life, love and chance. She is hired to work for a well known nightclub entertainer as a social secretary and general organizer of the young eccentric singer Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams.) and gets a look at a lifestyle she never knew existed, fun and romance ensues.

I was already fan of wonderful actor Frances McDormand (Fargo) when I saw this film in 2008. But Amy Adams was new to me. What a delight to see her in this film. As a romance author I loved the fresh way the romantic storyline was delivered. And though Lee Pace is young and handsome as Michael, I couldn’t take my eyes off of Ciaran Hinds who radiates depth of character and magnetism just by being in a scene.

The screenplay was adapted from the novel by Winifred Watson. According to Wikipedia…With the exception of Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, all of Watson's novels are set in the countryside. Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day, was Watson's third novel and was initially rejected. Watson had wanted to write a fun story after her work on two dramas. She and her publisher compromised and she agreed to write another drama set in the country similar to her previous work (Upyonder, published in 1938) if they would publish Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. As Ms. Watson predicted, Miss Pettigrew was an immediate success—in England, Australia and the United States. Persephone Books published Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day first in 2001, then in 2003, 2004, and 2005, and finally as a Persephone Classic in 2008
Screenwriters David Magee Life of Pi and Simon Beaufoy The Hunger Games Catching Fire

Director Bharat Nalluri The Crow Salvation, a very different kind of film BTW
